Rancho Leonero Resort
Please note: Rancho Leonero Resort permanently closed on December 1, 2023.
Rancho Leonero Resort is probably the last of a dying breed of destinations that was extremely popular from the 1950’s till the year 2000. These small beach-side resorts, formed the genesis of what is Cabo today. Rancho was built at a time when getting to Baja was not-so-easy. Mostly, guests flew in small private aircraft, which explains why these resorts were very small. Mostly, boats were launched off the beach every morning at daybreak. This practice remains to this day at Leonero.
This small collection of palm-thatched bungalows is clustered on a low, rocky bluff just feet above the beach. Dinner is served on the patio jutting out just above the sea, which feels as though you are onboard a ship. Food is served from a set menu, which is a good mix of wholesome Mexican and American favorites.
The main activity here is fishing. Boats launch from about 6 am. Trips are booked at dinner, the evening before, so fishermen are able to walk down a rolling dock and board their boat rather easily. They have everything waiting for them; lunches, drinks, and tackle.
