Punta Baja

Punta Baja is a well-known surf break and fish camp just a short drive from El Rosario, where you can find some very basic accommodations. The local fishermen will sometimes rent their boats for fishing expeditions. The coastal road gets pretty rough south of Punta Baja but it leads to more surf breaks, great camping sites and wide open areas for motorcycles and ATV’s. This is also an area where some really good windsurfing spots can be found. Hopefully, if you make this trek for windsurfing, the conditions will be just right.

Punta Baja was a small fishing camp, long before the surfers discovered it. The small camps around Punta Baja also supply lobster, clams and abalone. Punta Baja has been a very popular surfing spot for many years. It is relatively close to the border and Southern California surfers can be there in a matter of hours when the word gets out about a swell. The best waves come in the summer months when the swells are coming in from the storms in the southern portion of the Eastern Pacific.

A semi-easy, half hour drive will get you to Punta Baja from El Rosario. There are a few roads leading out of Punta Baja that will take you further south to more waves (usually not as consistent) and some pretty good windsurfing spots.

There is a small (what they call) hotel with basic rooms and limited supplies. They also have a small store (and…it’s even open occasionally) with just the basics – beer, sodas, canned tuna, crackers and bread.

At times, you may even be able to get a meal here, usually some very fresh fish. Ask if there is any lobster or abalone available, you may get lucky. Most surfers camp somewhere on the point during nice weather, although this area is prone to some pretty hefty winds. If the wind is blowing, you will want to find a protected place to camp, or better yet, head farther south to warmer waters and better waves.

Roads leading to the south will take you to additional surf breaks and some great windsurfing beaches. If you have chosen to explore points south, make sure you have a full tank of gas and your vehicle is in good condition. The roads, at times, can be very bad and not easily passable, even in a 4×4.
