Recreation

Baja Recreation

Baja California is a recreation playground. A playground for all ages. Almost all outdoor activities are available in one form or another. We don’t have snow skiing, though. But waterskiing? Yes!

The remarkable Sea of Cortez is obviously the major attraction in Baja. This calm body of water, nearly a thousand miles long, is a living playground on a grand scale. Boating and sailing have been popular here for about one hundred years. The very nature of the Sea, with all the natural harbors and places to explore, has drawn explorers from all over the world. The calm seas and mostly mild winds, have allowed for sailors of all skill levels to enjoy what is on offer.

The huge quantities of Billfish in and around the Sea of Cortez have continued to bring anglers from all over the world. Lately, there has been an explosion in the number of Fly Fishermen arriving to pit themselves against the mighty Roosterfish that patrol the beaches of Baja.

In days gone by, windsurfing was the sport of choice for the breezy winter conditions. These days, however, windsurfing has been eclipsed by Kiteboarding. There are a number of outfitters catering to these adventurers. Surfing has always been popular down here with uncrowded places to enjoy the swells. In summer, any hurricane activity in the Pacific, causes wonderful surfing swells in many areas of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Side.

Pretty much everyday during the season is a good day to snorkel. The numerous reefs everywhere and the tropical waters make for fantastic snorkeling. A little known fact is that the Cabo Pulmo Reserve is home to the only barrier reef on the Pacific Coast of North America. Here, you will find a few outfitters that will give you a short course on diving and take you to see the wonders of the underwater world.

For years, there have been dolphins in captivity where one can actually swim with them and interact. In La Paz, there is an outfitter that will take you swimming with whale sharks.

For the older folks, the selection of golf courses grows every year. Most of them are spectacular and probably charge a little more than you are accustomed to paying, but still are well-worth the experience on vacation.

Here at allaboutbaja.net, we will continue to provide you with new and existing recreational activities on these pages.
