Kayaking in Baja

Sea Kayaking in Baja has become increasingly popular as more visitors look for eco-friendly ways to travel the peninsula and more marine preserves come under Mexican government protection from commercial exploitation.

Kayakers can get to remote coastal and island beaches that are inaccessible to larger boats or those traveling by land. There are appropriate destinations for all abilities, from Bahia Concepcion for beginners to the Loreto/La Paz route for advanced kayakers.

Kayaking on the Pacific side of Baja requires more experience. Punta Banda, south of Ensenada, is popular with San Diegans. Magdalena Bay in Southern Baja draws a crowd of kayakers in winter for whale watching, but you shouldn’t venture out too far into the bay without an experienced guide.

Another popular recreational activity is to fish from a kayak. This growing sport is bringing more and more enthusiasts down to Baja every year. The greatest advantages, apart from the cost, are that they are highly portable and manageable without any help. Launching is as simple as sitting down and paddling.

Hobie® Kayaks have recently brought out a range of pedal kayaks. These vessels provide a totally hands-free experience. These fishing platforms can be tricked out with bait tank, sonar and tackle storage. You can even fight a fish standing up. The fact that the angler can also glide along soundlessly allows for very close proximity to reefs and sandbars.

Imagine tying a kayak on your camper roof and exploring the majestic Baja!
