Baja is synonymous with off road racing since the 1st SCORE Baja 1000® in 1967. This culture has been a mainstay with racers and fans around the world as the mystique of Baja continues to allure. As well, the local fans have become accustomed to this action and have made it a culture that generations have followed and have become involved with. The off-road or desert racing scene in Baja has become so large with the different events, that it is actually the number one sport in our 2 states of Norte and Sur. Most visitors are aware of the traditional Baja 1000® but we do have many local races that draw huge crowds to join in the activities of the traditional preview or vehicle inspection, which is the evening before each race. These previews are grand parades, in the center of the respected hosting city, which are quite the fiestas. They go late into the night as huge crowds gather to get close to the race vehicles and drivers while they await the official mandatory safety inspection before the race the next day. Come race day, fans gather early around the course, which ranges from local short-course circuits to the more traditional 100 to 300-mile courses. First to start, are the motorcycles, quads, then followed by the cars and trucks. The race courses are open terrain, which demands respect from the pit or chase crews and fans alike, as the vehicles are in full-race mode and are focused on the task. Yes, this is a dangerous sport for the participants, as well as the spectators, so please remember to use common sense, stay back and watch from a safe distance off the race course.
The freedom and wild-west feeling of Baja bring lots of visitors that want to experience the openness and beauty that Baja Sur has to offer. For this, people have the option to tour on motorcycles, quads, UTVs, or cars, to get the adrenaline feeling without risking life-and-limb of racing. The landscape and friendliness of the people of Baja Sur, make this a special place to do so. And really, there is no better way to see the beauty of Baja Sur!
